Drilling was kick started with a ceremony attended by President Dervis Eroglu, Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk and Turkey's Minister for Energy and Natural Resources Taner Yildiz.
Speaking at the ceremony President Dervis Eroglu said, "Another strategically highly important link is being added to the brotherhood and cooperation between motherland Turkey and Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus."
Eroglu said, "The exploration shows that we shall never cease the struggle for economic, political and social existence on this island."
Referring also to the water pipeline project that has started, to bring water to TRNC Eroglu said, "I believe new horizons will prevail once the energy is added to this".
On the issue of the Cyprus problem Eroglu said, Greek Cypriot side did not have the will for a settlement despite joint efforts of TRNC and Turkey for the past 50 years.
"Regrettably those who should be preventing their (Greek Cypriots) games, have not been acting responsibly. This should not continue. Turkish Cypriot should free himself from the status quo that has been standing since 1964" he said.
Reminded the offer he made to the Greek Cypriot leader, proposing that the gains from natural resources to be used after a settlement, Eroglu said, "refusal of the offer by Christofias showed what kind of party Turkish Cypriot side was dealing with".
Prime Minister Irsen Kucuk addressing the crowd said, "As Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, we will use the gains from such projects, to improve the environment for a settlement on the island"
"This land, where 50 years ago our citizens could not go to their fields or graze their herds because there was no security, possesses oil and natural gas which would contribute to its economic wellbeing" he added.
Sunat Atun, the Minister for Economy and Energy, "The agreement with TPAO which we are only partners for the gains, displays the depth of motherland and junior land".
Taner Yıldız the Energy and Natural Resources Minister of Turkey, said, "There is one in a thousand chance to find petrol in the first drilling. There is possibility that no oil and gas will be found. This drilling is part of a packet."
He said the works had a strategic importance, therefore great importance was attached to the matter.
