The citizens of Lefkosa voted today for electing the new mayor of Lefkosa and the replacements for the 15 municipal council members today.
According to the results of the 133 ballot boxes announced by the High Electoral Council the candidate of Republican Turkish Party (CTP-BG) received % 34.82 of the votes and the ratio of the votes received by the other candidates are as follows: Hasan Sertoglu from National Unity Party (UBP) % 26,02; Mustafa Arabacioglu from Democrat Party (DP) % 20.83; Suphi Hudaoglu from Communal Democracy Party %14.12; Murat Kanatli from New Cyprus Party (YKP) %1.62; Zehra Cengiz from Cyprus Socialist Party (KSP) % 0,33 and the independents %1.25.
The new mayor and municipal council members will be serving for the next 14 months until the next local elections in 2014. UBP's 7 municipal council members who had mot resigned will also be serving till the same date.
New elected mayor of Nicosia Kadri Fellahoglu serving as a CTP-BG Parliamentarian at Republican Assembly of TRNC will have to resign from deputyship before starting his duty as the Mayor.
After Fellahoğlu's resignation the number of parliamentarians of CTP-BG at the Republican Assembly will decrease to 14 from 15. UBP has 30, TDP 3 and DP 2 parliamentarians at the 50 seated Assembly.
On the other hand the voter turnout to the municipal elections announced by the High Electoral Board is %58.65.
After the announcements of the results of the elections Kadri Fellahoglu made a speech addressing to the citizens of Lefkosa and the workers of the municipality. He said both the workers and the residents of Lefkosa were in a tough spot and stressed they would overcome whole of the difficulties hand in hand with the workers of the municipality.
